Hello. I'm Viola Sutanto, Founder of MAIKA, where we create thoughtfully-designed, sustainably-made everyday goods.
Have you been thinking about leading a more sustainable lifestyle, but feel overwhelmed by where to start?
When I first started thinking about adapting a more eco-friendly lifestyle, I found myself going down a rabbit hole for the “perfect” approach. As it turns out, there isn’t one. Sustainability isn’t an all-or-nothing way of living. And doing something is better than doing nothing. You do what works best for you, with what you have and what you can. Simple as that.
Since then, I've been inspired to help others ease into a more sustainable, conscious lifestyle. Here are my 10 (fun) tips to get started.
1. Say no to the little things
When you have the urge to accept something (like a plastic straw, an additional bag or even a business card), think “do I really need it?"
2. Eat more plants, less meat
Why? A diet of mostly grains, fruits and vegetables is not only healthy, it reduces water and land use, lowers pollution, and is better for the environment. Make it fun! For instance, you could implement “Meatless Mondays”. Here’s some ideas to get you started.
3. Travel with a zero-waste kit
Gather essentials (reusable bottle or tumbler, bamboo/metal utensils, a stainless steel straw, a toothbrush and handkerchief or cloth napkin) in a cute bucket and stash it in your bag or car.
4. Host a clothes swap
Set up your living room as a "boutique" and invite some friends over for a fun shopping experience.
5. Opt out of junk mail
Here’s how to do it. You can also use this app to snap a photo of your junk mail and it will unsubscribe for you.
6. BYOB: Bring Your Own Bag
Always keep a reusable bag (or 2) in your car for on-the-spur errands.
7. Learn and Grow
Think repair instead of replace. Can you sew that rip instead of buying a new pair of pants? How about growing your own herbs instead of buying?
8. Walk. Run. Bike
Before jumping into your car, take a second to think whether you can walk, or run or bike or bus it to your destination.
9. Get a library card
Alternatively, e-books and audio books are great options.
10. Gift sustainably and thoughtfully
Need to buy gifts for friends and family? Think reusable items like reusable bottles and bags, e-subscriptions/ memberships, experiences (classes, tickets, gift certificates), or offer your talents in the form of services or DIY gifts.
I hope you've found these tips helpful. Do them all, or pick and choose what sounds appealing. And share your stories with us: firstname.lastname@example.org We’d love to hear from you!
