With the holidays just around the corner, we are tinkering in the kitchen quite a bit these days! We thought it would be fun to show you how to etch on jars for your foodie gifts.
Etching on glass is not as challenging as it sounds. It’s a great way to customize your glass packaging without spending a fortune. Initially, it will require some practice on your part, but, once you get the hang of it, the process is quick and the result is elegant.
Materials
●Glass canning jars
●Contact paper or adhesive paper
●Cutting mat
●Utility or craft knife with a sharp blade
●Etching cream (such as Armour Etch, available from craft stores)
●Protective gloves
●Brush
●Marker or pen
Draw or trace the artwork onto the contact paper.
Use your utility knife to cut out the artwork. This is your stencil.
Position your stencil and smooth it onto the glass jar completely, making sure there are no loose edges or bubbles.
Don’t forget to wear your gloves for this step! Brush a generous amount of etching cream onto the area you’d like to etch. Refer to the instructions that come with your particular etching cream for information and drying time.
Tip: Any glass the cream touches will be altered, so you need to be careful and contain it just to the area you want etched.
