THE BACKSTORY

Nestled atop a hill overlooking the Aegean Sea, the town of Plaka on Milos island, Greece charmed us instantly. The island itself is a hidden gem, with pristine beaches, secluded coves and dramatic cliffs. Much like what you would typically see in postcards of Greece, Plaka boasts plenty of narrow cobblestone streets, adorned with whitewashed buildings and vibrant bougainvillea. But it was really the abundance of blue-green accents against white buildings first inspired our color palette.

THE DESIGN PROCESS

Looking back at my initial sketches, they focused mostly on landscapes, skylines and undulating lines of the cerulean waters. Over time, the paintings became more and reductive, until an abstract interpretation of the blue skies merging into the turquoise waters emerged, adorned by twinkling stars at night. All of these became the foundational elements of the pattern development.

The blues that dominate Plaka are plucked directly from the island’s landscape palette. Brilliant azure, cerulean, and hints of dark grey evoke a sense of tranquility and wonder that surrounds the town. Although Plaka is part of our Fall collection, its palette is timeless and season-less.

Oh how wonderful! My initial thoughts were of the little neighborhood in Athens near the Acropolis named “Plaka”. It is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Athens. Very vibrant and full of night life!!! I will have to look into this collection when it hits my store! Or I see it in my rep’s show at the Seattle Show!
